My Automations Didn't Work As Expected
Automations are a powerful way of merchandising your collection pages. There may be a number of reasons why your automation moved products in a way that's not expected. First, you may need to check if the sort was successful.
Was the Automation completed?
- Check the Automation Scheduler on the Automation main page, here you can see if and when the last automation was run.

- If it was run, check the collection page on the Shopify backend (in the admin). Under Products, view the products. Do they appear in the order you expect? If they appear normal here but not on your collection page, you may have a filtering or merchandising app that is in control of the the frontend of your site (your actual website that customers see). If so, they may ignore merchandising changes and set products in the order they wish. If this case, it's best to speak to the app directly.
How Automations Work
Understanding how an Automation works can help in figuring out why certain changes were made.
- Automations work from bottom to top. This means if a product is found in a section at the bottom of the collection (e.g. at the bottom you select products with inventory less than 3). Then it will only appear in that section, even if a section at the top of the collection has rules that fits that product.
- Automations work from section 1 onwards. Similar to above, if a product matches a rule in section 1 at the top of the collection, it won't be included in sections 2+ at the top of the collection. The same is for the bottom of a collection, but from the bottom up.
- The magic group to row tool may also make changes you weren't expecting. If enabled, it can reorder products in order to best place products in rows of together. Sometime other products will be moved upwards/downwards in order to do this.
- If you select products 'must' be grouped into rows, if a product doesn't have a group or can't be placed into a full row, then it will not be used in the section.
- If you're using Performance Scores, the performance score we use on Automations will be different to the Performance Score you see on the Drag & Drop Merchandiser. This is because of slightly different parameters used to determine scores.
